I PRAY IT WASN’T YOU, MY FRIEND

I pray it wasn’t you, my friend.

Who approached us that night as we sat on the dewy grass gazing upward towards the changing lights on the Eiffel Tower. Who sold me a miniature tower as a keepsake. Who worked the tower lifts that day? Who sold me a handbag from the many  you carried by night and then by day a book we bought from Shakespeare’s.  Who served us at that restaurant on the 1st arrondissament. Who went  home pleased with your night’s work to help feed your family.Who sipped champagne with us in the moonlight and let that dog lick your face? Who asked for a paper cup so that a stranger could drink on the steps of  Sacre Coeur? Who strummed your guitar and sang to us a love song; who took  us safely  home that night? Who sold us French sticks and creme at dusk? Who rode beside us on the Metro to Montmarte.  Who ran the Paris to Varsailles? Who showed us the face of your new baby boy…

I pray it wasn’t you, my friend.

This image of Paris's Eiffel Tower as the peace symbol was widely circulated across social media on Friday night. It was designed by London artist Jean Julien.
