CLIMBING THE LADDER TO SUCCESS… watch your step

Have you ever worked at a job where you failed miserably or, at the very least, you felt you had  failed miserably? Have you ever set up a company or business only to have it fail because of lack of capital, assistance, support, experience and/or energy? I most certainly have. I say this as though I am proud of it; as if this is something that each and every one of us longs to do, but pride has nothing to do with my uplifted tone. It has taken me some time to arrive at this understanding that you only fail if you do not try. Oh, sure, I’ve heard it before, so have you, it’s been bandied around for ages, but truly being able to relate to this cliche comes with maturity and maturity comes from  wisdom, and wisdom comes from understanding how God fits into the equation of work and play. Now with that lesson well and truly learned I’m more equipped to forward the Kingdom of God and take ground for Him as I take up the  radical plan He has for my life, which to some may be called climbing the ladder to succcess! It all depends where you are coming from.

On failing, I know Kaherine Leary Alsdorf has experienced what it feels like to fail in a job. How do I know? Because Katherine speaks about it in the introduction to the book she co-authored with Timothy Keller entitled  Every Good Endeavour – connecting your work to God’s plan for the world published by Hodder. I was drawn to this book having always been striving and searching for the perfect job myself yet never finding it, until a decade ago. If you are like me, you may have questioned the reason for work on more than one occasion. Why I am doing this?  Why is it so hard? What can I do about it? Will I ever find what I am looking for?

In case you haven’t realised it yet, God actually created us to work.  The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. (Genesis 2:1-34)

With deep insight, Timothy Keller draws on essential and relevant biblical wisdom to address our questions about work.

This book is both precious and timely in today’s insecure world. So much so that I have actually purchased a copy to take up a place on the shelf at  my Chappy’s Library at Pomona State School.
